Last night's show at the Bug Jar can only be described as amazing. Every so often a band and a crowd meet, and like a fated couple on their first date uncontrollable giddiness ensues. The dynamic between these two forces last night for whatever reason melded to make for certain was the best show I've seen at the bug jar.
POBPH pretty much blew the roof of of the place. Effusing energy through their music that shook the soul. It was powerful stuff for sure. Opening with A Teenager in Love then This Love is Fucking Right was a slow build. The crowd though built with the band in unison. And by the time Everything With You came on it was apparent as the lead singer commented "we're having a really good time". So were we.
The most impressive portions of the set and probably my new favorite songs were Stay Alive and Gentle Sons the two barn burners by pop punk standards at nearly 5 minutes a piece. The band simply destroyed these songs. Earth shattering riffs ripped through the building as the venue was simply too small to hold in the dynamic power of the music. I think the soul shaking is the only way I can properly describe what was going on. One of those moments that you never forget, and that you never want to end, played out through sonic destruction of the air that night.
Part of the set also included 103 which is going to be on their forthcoming 7", and a few other songs that I didn't initially recognize which I would guess come off an EP or demo that I never heard..
My expectations for this show were not all that high. As I earlier POBPH to me was more like a fun pop band than a serious "contender" (pun intended). However I was thoroughly proved wrong. This band is the real deal. My only complaints about the show would be that the set was way too fucking short (30 to 45 minutes tops), and they didn't play a couple of my album faves Hey Paul and Contender ... why?!!!
Regardless, it was still the a thrilling night. If it's the intent of every band's live show to either make new fans, or make current fans even more enthralled then at least for the latter no more of an understatement could be made. This band has instantly become a classic, and brought me memories that are going to be near the top of the list for quite some time.
As far as SITM week they're going to be the hardest act to follow. Good thing Marnie can basically be bleeding from her eyes and I'd find her adorable.
Easily a 10 out of 10 for the night.
