Mmmm.... Naked Kim

Follow up to the video for the new matt and kim video. These guys are so much fun ... i just love it.

Marnzanity: fact or fiction

Fact: Marnie Stern is clearly more impressive in the live setting.

Fiction: Marnie is actually kind of a half assed guitarist who gets cred only cause she's a smokin hot blonde.
Reason: After seeing her perform in online videos I basically expected some lazily sounding guitar work that was trying (but failing) to keep up with the studio refined work from her album. And some god awful vocal work This was not the case as she slayed the living shit cakes out of her songs. On a scale that caused euphoric bouts of crippling joy. You know that feeling you get on a rollercoaster? The cars are being dragged along the track, click, click, click. Your chest tightens as you prepare. Your palms sweat as you grasp to the bar holding you in, only to become further convinced you're definitely going to fly out this time ... you get to the top,. that breif pause. the jolt and the drop. .... that feeling you get on the way down. You might fall out, but if you do it'd be the best way to die .... thats what it was like for me listening to her fuck up that guitar last night. Just incredible. Whew.

Fact: Marnie carries the weight of her music, not the drummer / backup rhythm section. She does this by pulling the 'ol A-bird and looping in her ridiculousness so that she can pile more amazing guitar work over the top of that ...

Fiction: Marnie Stern is a happy go lucky gal who has a good time no matter where she is, or who she is with.
Reason: I thought it was kind of a downer that she seemed to be annoyed by A) the people in the bar trying to talk to her. I mean most people were there to see her perform. She was sitting out at the merch table / bar the entire time. Why was she pissed that people kept trying to talk to her. It didn't make much sense to me.. B) the fact that she was in rochester in the first place. She seemed genuinely disinterested in the entire scene. It was totally a bummer. But

Fact: I have no balls. I completely pussed out on my opportunity to meet her. I'm still trying to understand why I didn't just clang them together and at least be another in the line of douchebags that tried to make awkward small talk. Though I did give her an enthusiastic wave when I walked in. Of course this was pre- realization that she would not be the inviting person i had expected. But in that moment I will take away that I got her attention and she acknowledged my existence (insert wayne's world "we are not worthy" here).

Another great show.... my google calendar tag for yesterday had it perfect "Marnie Stern - i'm in love!!!!"

Also ... i know a certain someone who is going to be quite excited about this show. Not a bad trade for having to miss bonna that weekend, right?

some other news

as the title of this blog might suggest here at sonic anarchy dispose of rules and order for a more care free and open methodologies. That being said there's some other things going on this week in music that (or maybe more so over hte course of the past week) that is/was not directly related to Stick it to the man.

Since sitmw kind of stuck it to me I ended up falling asleep earlier than grandma post afternoon bingo sessions with Geraldine and the girls. Thus leaving me with this window of opportunity in the AM to share some other thoughts. Hmm, lets see first off lets do some quick takes on some of the new music I've been listening to:

Jeremy Jay - Slow Dance - Initially downloaded as a kind of joke to myself. I had seen the video for the title track and was amused by JJ's cool demeanor. Further intrigued to find out what this was all about by learning that he was going to be making an appearance at the bug jar. Much to my pleasant surprise this album has become a heavy rotation player. Its hard to describe the music beyond using the term "cool". Its not aggressive, but its not too laid back. It might at first strike you as lazy, but its actually not. Its just really really really fucking cool. Anyways, I can't urge people enough to really give this album a shot. Canter Canter, Winter Wonder, and Where Could We go Tonight are fucking epic jams. Its unfortunate that this came out prior to summer as its winter theme would have made for an amazing seasonal (haha, that sounds like some sort of beer snob comment).

Dan Deacon - Bromst - Its a little early for me to go full bore on a review here. My first impressions however are that its good, but a little over the top, like this guy is trying to cause you to have a stroke. Very Aphex Twin sounding, but there's all these awesome piano parts interspersed which give the album this underlying kind of pretty sound that I am really digging. For sure seeing a live set of this stuff would be insanely entertaining, but I don't think this is something I would want to be filling my sensory organs on a very heavy rotation. Good shit though.

Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue - I am way behind on this train. But I am loving the ride. Simple, bluesy, catchy, pretty, fun sing alongs. Nothing wrong with that. Best line of the album "I went down to dixie, and dropped acid on my tongue, tripped upon the land until enough was enough" ... haha. Oh man oman, omen.

Super Furry Animals - Dark Days / Light Years - I was expecting something different I guess. I was kind of expecting to find a band much more in the vein of Animal Collection, maybe because I have this innate sense to categorize bands by their names or something. I've had this problem before. Anyways, I had read adjectives like "experimental" and "creative" and "psychodelic" regarding this band. So I guess I was expecting to hear something really out there. And yes, they do infuse a bunch of different sounds together. But the music is generally underwhelming to me. Though I am going to stick with it a bit longer. The track The Very Best of Neil Diamond definitely has caught my attention, and perhaps in time more of this album will too.

Amadou and Mariam - Welcome to Mali - This album has pretty much defined a new interest in Afro based music. Solid songs top to bottom. The arrangements here are exemplary of fucking elite ridonk skilled musicians. Plus I'm getting to learn French, which is cool. I am super excited to see them at bonna, this show is going to be crazy fun. Highlights include Sabali, Masiteladi, and Djama, and Ce N'est Pas Bon.

Lotus Plaza - The Floodlight Collective - It sounds like like super drugged out Microcastle. This isn't even shoegaze, its just gaze, like a thick fog of fuzz surrounding your entire being. And fuck all, its magnificent. I was completely surprised by this one, low expectations, met with just a simply beautiful album. Dude, plus the closer has this weird in and out, pulsating fuzz noise that gives me a stroke and makes me feel a little like i'm tripping balls ... its fucking amazing.

Doves - Kingdom of Rust - Don't listen to the hype. Not much here unless you're like really into Coldplay + minor electronic accompanyment+ bad rock music.

Up next: Japandroids - these guys are fucking awesome, Vetiver - got the new one, super excited, BrakesBrakesBrakes - just added to bonna, YES!!,

Well apparently my recent super binge on music has taken up more time than I was expecting. There are some cool news things I wanted to get to but I ran out of time. Except this. Man am I in love with Tracyanne, she's like ... perfect for me, and could sing me to sleep every night for the rest of my life.

Concert Review: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

Last night's show at the Bug Jar can only be described as amazing. Every so often a band and a crowd meet, and like a fated couple on their first date uncontrollable giddiness ensues. The dynamic between these two forces last night for whatever reason melded to make for certain was the best show I've seen at the bug jar.

POBPH pretty much blew the roof of of the place. Effusing energy through their music that shook the soul. It was powerful stuff for sure. Opening with A Teenager in Love then This Love is Fucking Right was a slow build. The crowd though built with the band in unison. And by the time Everything With You came on it was apparent as the lead singer commented "we're having a really good time". So were we.

The most impressive portions of the set and probably my new favorite songs were Stay Alive and Gentle Sons the two barn burners by pop punk standards at nearly 5 minutes a piece. The band simply destroyed these songs. Earth shattering riffs ripped through the building as the venue was simply too small to hold in the dynamic power of the music. I think the soul shaking is the only way I can properly describe what was going on. One of those moments that you never forget, and that you never want to end, played out through sonic destruction of the air that night.

Part of the set also included 103 which is going to be on their forthcoming 7", and a few other songs that I didn't initially recognize which I would guess come off an EP or demo that I never heard..

My expectations for this show were not all that high. As I earlier POBPH to me was more like a fun pop band than a serious "contender" (pun intended). However I was thoroughly proved wrong. This band is the real deal. My only complaints about the show would be that the set was way too fucking short (30 to 45 minutes tops), and they didn't play a couple of my album faves Hey Paul and Contender ... why?!!!

Regardless, it was still the a thrilling night. If it's the intent of every band's live show to either make new fans, or make current fans even more enthralled then at least for the latter no more of an understatement could be made. This band has instantly become a classic, and brought me memories that are going to be near the top of the list for quite some time.

As far as SITM week they're going to be the hardest act to follow. Good thing Marnie can basically be bleeding from her eyes and I'd find her adorable.

Easily a 10 out of 10 for the night.

quick takes event #1

so ... mostly because i'm still awake and enjoying my concert buzz i figured I'd try and start the trend of writing a short bit about the night in general before actually getting any sleep and more importantly perspective. so what you would be reading here would be more gut reaction, how was the night type of situation.

first off, i don't know how this will pan out but as soon as I got home I put on Bromst. Haha, I think that album is going to become something special.

But more importantly the show. Really I should have recorded my phone conversation with Bill, post show. Basically Pains of Being Pure at Heart were fucking epic. They may well be one of the best live bands I've ever seen. Or maybe I was disappointed that much by Titus Andronicus. Where I felt like none of their true sound carried over, and it was just a bunch of loud fuzzy guitars. If you didn't know the song well you wouldn't be able to tell what the fuck you were listening to.

Pains were the opposite. Their live show was actually BETTER than the album. They fucking cranked the shit out of their sound. I had rock boner all night. They fucking killed. I'm not particularly sure why they had such a good time, but thank jesus they did because the energy they brought was fucking amazing. I can only hope the next two shows are going to be as well received.

More on this show as a night of rest and contemplation will help evolve my current thoughts .... stick it to the fucking man ...

SITMW Day 1: Day 2 ... wait what??

The intended purpose of this post is to provide a brief recap of the important things to not regarding the current Stick it to the man day. That said, today's most interesting bit of news is that unofficially stick it to the man week kicked off yesterday. The kickoff was unplanned, and unintended. But the party gods do not give two shits from a chinaman's chin what your plans are. This is after all about the rock.

So yes, we've jumped ahead to day 2 already. Technically yesterday wasn't about the music. Though hearing Operation Ivy's "she's a bombshell" at a bowling alley is among the day's highlights for certain. Also that weird drunk dude that had to come personally thank me for picking Styxx's "renegade" was a highlight ( or low light, but memorable none the less).

There is already a serious anxiety born from my fear that I won't be able to keep this up. But with your help and support I am going to do this come hell or high water.

Tonight should prove to be quite epic. First off, tonight's band, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are a band that are quickly gaining a lot of print space. They play an older, fuzzier, 80's era shoegaze rock. I would compare their sound to a cross between My Bloody Valentine and the Smiths. With a definitely touch of pop sensibilities. Reviews of their self titled debut weer pretty varied as pitchfork awared the BNM title, and a headling spot at the p4k festival this summer. Then there's TMT who essentially downplayed the band and basically called them out as borning. My opinions lie somewhere in between. I really enjoy the sound, but I wouldn't go so far as to say they're some unique talent. Good, cool songs that are fun to listen to, and will provide for a massive sound inside the small confines of the bug jar.

On top of that it also happens to be my friend, Kristin's birthday .... so yeah, an added excuse to drink more and celebrate more heavily ... what a way to get this party started, huh?

On the bright side, its come to my attention that my boss has an out of state meeting tomorrow, so he'll just have to hear about how out of it was, and won't get the chance to actually witness it .... see you on the flip side

welcome to stick it ot the man week

Dear Valued Reader,

Welcome to "Stick it to the Man Week" or as I may refer to it "sitmw". I've decided to dedicate the first post (of many) to explaining a little bit more about what sitmw is all about. If you have any additional questions as always please feel free to ask via email, phone, IM, sms, txt, , or my personal fav sext messages. I should actually change that to "i will only accept questions via sexting". So like you can ask your question by writing it on your balls, taking a picture of it, and sending it to me. Not only Acceptable but also preferred.

But I digress and the pleasantries of sexting should be explained at a different time. More about stick it to the man week:

Q: What is stick it to the man week?
A: SITMW started as a random occurrence whereby 3 bands that I wanted to see decided to visit rochester over a 4 day span. All the of the days happened to fall during the work week. This of course seemed to be a daunting proposition of balancing the excitement and experiences of seeing some great music acts and having to be at work bright and early, preferably free from the smell of the large volumes of alcohol that had fueled previously mentioned excitement.

In an act of boldness, and realizing what is truly important to myself I parlayed the trepidation into exuberance instead. With care or concern I decided to make the most of the week and to hell with others' expectations. Though, undoubtedly work is going to hurt, my production at work will in turn most likely "hurt" them (the mans). Hence "sticking it".

Q: Why do I care?
A: You probably don't. However for the most part it should make for some interesting (read: nonsensical) blog posts. And at the very least will provide ACTUAL RELEVANT music based information in this space.

Q: So who all is playing already, so I can decide if i should bother checking back this week?
A: The linesup in order of appearance:

Monday: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

Wednesday: Marnie Stern

Thursday: Jeremy Jay

Bonus: Saturday in Buffalo i'm going to see The Thermals!! Although this show falls outside of the work week it will provide a proper bookend to Stick it to The Man week.

Lessons Learned

eeeee male

dude, damon albarn produced sabali. hence why it is all different sounding. that song is downright amazing. wish the whole album was like that. but i'm still getting my jollies with the rest of the album. not feeling the "building" aspect you speak of. But instead just kind of enjoying the fact that it was the right time, right place for me to hear an amazing afro beat/blues based album. taking it for what it is. also, apparently this album focuses "less" on amadou's guitar work but i quickly identified the guitars as "fucking sick" almost immediately. decided to post this on my blog instead. pretty much the same if this had come through the email. but whatevs.

Titus Andronicus

These guys can't get enough press in my opinion. Glad to see the guys over at TMT feel the same way.

Also that other post below where they're rocking in someone's garage is amazing if you haven't watched it you should. Its got No Future Part III which was a new song to me. I effing love it and cannot wait to get the rest of their unreleased shiz. Still trying to track down the song we heard in buffalo.

Initial Thoughts on the Lolla Lineup

The lineup has been announced, let the speculation between bonna and lolla redux begin.

First thing is that there are a massive amount of the same bands playing:

Beasties, Snoop, A Bird, TVOTR, Decemberists, Neko Case, Ben Harper, AC, BoH,Of Montreal, Coheed, Crystal Castles, Bon Iver, Santogold...

But the one thing I am noticing is the breadth of what has been referred to as "second tier" acts. The list of additional acts is kind of kicking me in the gut at the moment. This list includes (holy fucking shit man): Fleet Foxes, Los Campesinos, Tool, Kings of Leon, Vampire Weekend, Deerhunter (<--- FUUUUCK), Gang Gang Dance, Friendly Fires, Peter Bjorn and John, Dan Auerbach (good call on Black Keys always showing at lolla kid), No Age, Ra Ra Riot ...

The other thing that Lolla has going for it is the list of those third tier bands. What I would describe as bands I've heard a lot about but don't know which includes: Airborne Toxic Event, Silversun Pickups, Passion Pit, The Gaslight Anthem, and Thievery Corporation.

So in conclusion ... i'm totally second guessing my decision now. Better headliners, every band that was a "must see" at Bonna, plus fucking lykke li ... shit shit shit shit

dost my eyes deceive me?

according to this post the dirty projectors are playing bonnaroo!!! Hell effin yes!!! I just soiled.

see, right now would be the perfect time embed stillness is the move on this post. just so you, the reader can be as eager to see dirty projectors slay the audience with their off kilter electro jam noise blues dance fusion. and also make you cry that you do not live in NYC where i imagine every day is just like that dark was the night vid where all the hipsters are hanging out playing songs for each other ... because that is actually how life really should be. no?

i like it even thought kanye is on it

2009-04-14

interesting news to me.

according to pitchfork.com (that sounds pretty darn near professional, dontchathink?) the decemberists upcoming tour will "pull a My Chemical Romance. They'll start out by playing their new album, The Hazards of Love, in its entirety, and they'll follow that up with a set of their older songs"

i don't even want to know why this is referred to as a "my chemical romance", but i feel like that is a shot at the decemberists, which I don't really get. Also, after my recent review of the album, i think it would be kind of awesome to see. Plus room for the ever elusive Red Right Ankle?!! C'mon, that should a great show....

as of now no shows in or around WNY. One can hope they're allotted the time at Bonna, but I'm not holding my breath.

2009-04-13

awwww shit ...

According to stereogum The Dirty Projector's Bitte Orca is this year's microcastle. Not in those words but the relational equivalent.

Based on how much i lost my shit to:
it stands to reason that my excitement is equally hopeful for the success of this album ... come on feet!

posty

Had to post this so I would be able to find it easy when i got. but you go ahead and enjoy as well.

song of the day

so 2009 is pretty much the year all my female lead (and future wives) favs release new work.... here's the song of the day ... shit, i love her voice.

the thermals - now you can see

this is my third go round in the thermals collection. one might suspect after hearing their previous work that there probably weren't going to be many surprises here. For the most part I would agree with that. What exactly are these things? Hmm, lets see.

Fun pop punch power chord jams? check
Crazy fun hooks that grip the listener into singing along? check
Sarcastic wordplay that makes you want to move to Oregon and go geopolitical on someone's ass? check.
An unabashed desire to start a 3 chord punk band? check.

Honestly this album plays like a the b-sides to The Body The Blood The Machine. It reminds me of a new age version of "fixed" by NIN, the remix b-side complement to Broken.

The themes here play to hope and recovery. Pretty good ideals to get into during the spring in gloomy western new york. This album has immediately invigorated the season and it could be an entire week until i'm completely sick of this album. The messages here are uplifting, but i am finding them less resounding than the imagery and themes on TBTBTM.

A few things that need to be pointed out. There are at least 2 songs that sound almost identical to previous work. And the thermals sound really hasn't evolved one bit since The Body. I recently remarked that this was actually something that I was looking forward to on this album. But already I am disappointed that there isn't more substance here. Or at minimum a return to the fervor found on Fuckin A.

But the flip side is that it take a thermals fan all of about 2 songs or 4 minutes in thermals time to fall in love with this record. This album isn't going to shatter minds, pocket books, or preconceived notions about who the thermals are. But if you're in the mood for some spring fun and sing along time throw this album on and enjoy.

Here's hoping that my perceived lack of creativity transcends beyond this album and into Hutch Harris' brain. Perhaps playing the same empty songs over and over will drive him back to the studio to prove that his gift if nothing else should be exploited over and over and over again.

2009-04-07

super tuesday

the lineup of new albums to listen today is spectacular

Mastodon - Crack the Skye
Camera Obscura - My Maudlin Career
The Thermals - Now We Can See

excitement!

Update 1: I think I kind of hate Mastodon now. B-O-R-I-N-G. The thing that made them interesting is their brutal approach. The brutality has been replaced by technical precision. Which, by all accounts is pretty amazing. Also I am thoroughly annoyed and bothered by the fact that the angry scream has been almost entirely replaced by some kind of bullshit new age Ozzy douche singing thing. Which yes, your vocals are prettier, but thsy sound stupid, and i think you're fat.

Update 2: There are three songs that stand out. And by stand out I mean fucking seriously rock, and make me eat those words above. The Czar, Crack the Skye, and The Last Baron are all pretty much amazing. Also, I realized the "bonus" cd that came with mine is actually the entire album, but instrumental only. Which I think I will probably enjoy a lot more. I think I just kind of don't like Oblivion or Diviniations. Divinations is probably my least favorite song as it sounds like a single and not like a mastodon song. Final thought: my lungs are in tact, split by neither blood nor thunder, but my ears are at least picqued .

now we can pee

Let the experiment begin

My first serious foray into the test case will with an album that I have been dying to get my hands on. The Thermals - Now We Can See was released yesterday to a positive review on TMT. Needless to say this has me highly encouraged. Honestly the thermals aren't about anything other than GREAT pop punk. Catchy, interesting songs. Lyrics that are easy and fun to sing along to.

Update: I'm 30 seconds into track 1 ... yes its a thermals album. Maybe that's why I enjoy them so much. What you see is what you get. And that's something that I'm appreciative of. What's this? The thermals didn't decide to do their "disco album". Oh no! They must suck as a band because they don't try to create uninteresting music with their own unique stamp.

A good follow up post could pit Now We Can See vs. 200 Million Thousand . Only because I feel like I'm contradicting myself a bit here. However I wonder if Black Lips followed their formula on Good Bad Not Evil if I would have felt the same way.

Regardless the show in buffalo is going to be sick. Man, Marnie, Titus Andronicus, Thermals, Animal Collective, Band of Horses, Tv On the Radio, Of Montreal are all going to be seen live in the next few months ... i can hardly believe that. If there is any possible way I can swing that camera obscura show in toronto (which is looking doubtful) that would pretty much make the next 3 months of my life the greatest string of musical experiences ...

Update 2: One thing I am immediately hesistant to accept is the message of "hopefullness" on the new album. Fuckin A was harsh, hard, punk ... yet fun. The Body, The Blood, The Machine was scathing, punk ... yet fun. This album seems light, hopeful, punk-lite ... yet fun. I think I enjoyed the the darker themes presented in previous work. Too early to call. At least initially I am enjoying the first single

sunday treat

a treat from me to you ...

a few questions raised here:

why the fuck don't we live out west?
why isn't my beard that awesome? or when will my beard be that awesome?
who will be there to witness my tears when i see this band?

what am i doing with my life?
